4 Seasons Screen
This screen was created by the circle of Kano Mitsonobu in the 16th century. It is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I have frequently thought of this genre as rather spiritual, observational and transcendent of time. Just think: on a rainy day --> isn't it hard to picture yourself in the bright sun? Artists back in the day collected enough sketches to represent the entire year in one space. It is a grand statement that lets us travel through time and through how we might feel in each instance of that time in one sweep of the eye.
