Calendar 2020 - Open Water: San Francisco
For ten years I swam in the waters of SF Bay. For ten years I was literally steeped in observation of light, texture, thermal sensation, taste of brine, call of birds and clemency of weather in many fine locations around the Bay.
The dream of putting together a "Twelve Beautiful Swims of SF" calendar began and grew. I was encouraged by members of the South End Rowing Club who invited me to participate in a group show at Live Worms Gallery next to Cafe Trieste.
By September of 2019, when the show happened, I had six landscapes finished in the style I wanted to have for the calendar.
I decided to go for it!
For two weeks and two months I sprinted and finished six more pieces somehow squishing it between my actual work as a medical illustrator.
The calendar was complete on Thanksgiving Day (and it was a late Thanksgiving that year).
With almost no marketing I sold about 400 of them. And then came the bitter irony. In March of 2020, Covid hit... and many of the calendars hung in offices and unused buildings for months on one single image.
They weren't forgotten though. People liked them quite a bit... and have either repurposed the 2020 calendar to work for '21 and '22, or have cut the pictures out and framed them.
I am asked when the next calendar will come out, and this photo essay is my answer.
