My next (and second) commercial calendar came 16 years later, in 2019.
This is the piece that was its origin: an icy mermaid sitting on a rock with New Year 2011 rising behind Alcatraz. It was drawn in black sharpie; but reproduced in silver ink on navy blue cloth.
Where was this coming from? Well, I had joined the South End Rowing Club to swim the New Year's Day Alcatraz swim for 2010.
A year later, both Al (who had joined the club for the rowing) and I were happily participating in club community and I was asked to design a t-shirt... one of many, many to follow.
In school I had always been very shy of graphic design... but my club t-shirts became an out-of-school education and the love of the sport honed my expression.
