Shay Bevel Gear
Each wheel has a bevel gear like this. Each wheel is on a solid axle and drives both sides of the train equally. Power is transmitted to one side of the axle only. It's very clever, but I suspect that it has lots of parasitic losses due to all the gears and joints.
